Growing in the winter and starting our minibeast hotel
Check out the photos from last week's Gardening club. Some fantastic growers had brought their cress seeds and radishes back into school to show us how they were growing. Outside, we made a start on building the minibeast hotel but we need your help to complete it. We urgently need bricks, slates, old pipes, logs and chunky sticks to make a comfortable habitat for our minibeast.

Planting in our new story garden
This week we have been lucky enough to be one of the first groups of children in our new story garden. As the gardening club we will be responsible for planting and maintaining the beds that sit behind the small benches that are around the garden. We have planted two of the beds with bulbs for next spring and we have planted a lavender plant in one bed and a rosemary in the other. We enjoyed touching these plants and smelling their gorgeous scent.

Harvest time in Gardening club
Over the summer the garden has become a bit of a jungle but the vegetables have been quietly growing. This week it was time to harvest what had grown so that we can get the beds ready for our winter planting. We sold the produce to the teaching staff and we raised over £8.50 which will go towards buying some winter onion sets that we can plant in the weeks to come.
Well done not only to the harvesters but to the children from last year's gardening club who planted and looked after the summer crops.
p.s. thank you to one of kind gardeners who brought in some basil and parsley that he had helped to grow at home so that we could taste it.

Artists Unite - Ink Blotting Pictures
Miss Coomber has an amazing imagination and fantastic ideas when it comes to art. Here are the children in artists unite enjoying making ink blotting pictures. You draw the picture using your handwriting pens and then with a tiny bit of water and a thin brush, blot the ink to create a smudged effect. Fantastic!!!

Animal club - Reindeer
This week because we had all been getting in the Christmas spirit decorating our
classrooms we decided to have a look at the animals that Santa relies on the most.......reindeer. We all went outside and worked in teams to answer questions and find out more about reindeers.
Did you know that girl reindeer grow antlers as well as the boy reindeer and that reindeer are good swimmers because they use their scooped hooves to move the water?

Guinea pigs visit to animal club
A bog thank you to Mrs B and R for bringing in their pet guinea pigs. They proved very popular and were fantastically behaved letting the children up close to give them lots of strokes.
The animal clubbers went on to draw some super pictures of the guinea pigs. The prize for finding out why guinea pigs are called guinea pigs is still up for grabs as no one has found out a plausible answer....see Mrs L if you have any answers.

Reptile spotted in animal club
We had an amazing visitor this week in animal club.....a bearded dragon lizard. Have a look at the pictures to see what a magnificent creature he was.
We learnt so much about this interesting creature like he turns black when he's grumpy and he can't eat anything bigger than his head. Thank you so much to the parent and grandparent that brought him in for us.
Here he's eyeing up his favourite snack of live locusts.
He really could move very fast which did startle a few animal clubbers Mrs Longhawn included !!!

This week we were visited by Thelma who brought her two dogs in, Rhoda and Alma. Thelma works for Guide Dogs for the blind, fundraising and educating people about the fantastic work that dogs can do for blind and partially aighted people.
A huge thank you to Thelma and the dogs for their time and Friends of Fieldhead for donating the weeks toast money as a donation to Guide Dogs for the Blind. If you want to find out more about this charity you can visit their website

We experienced what it would be like to be blind or partially sighted.
Taking Rhoda for a walk.......or is it the other way round??? Rhoda started her training as a guide dog nut it didn't work out as she is far too easily distracted by food. I know the feeling !!!
Looking like professionals.
These are called "sim specs". They simluate various eye conditions that can affect your sight like cataracts.

Cookery (19/10/12)
This week we are making Scones, here is the recipe;
8oz (225g) Self Raising flour
1 pinch of salt
1oz (25g) caster sugar
2oz (50g) margarine – block
2oz (50g) raisins
1 medium egg, beaten with milk to make ¼ pint (125ml)
Scones (makes about 8)
1oz (25g) caster sugar
2oz (50g) margarine – block
2oz (50g) raisins
1 medium egg, beaten with milk to make ¼ pint (125ml)
- Preheat the oven to 220 c / gas mark 7.
- Line a baking tray with baking paper.
- Mix the salt and flour into a mixing bowl and cut the margarine into cubes.
- Using your fingertips lightly rub the margarine into the flour until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Don’t over rub.
- Stir in the sugar and raisins.
- With a round-blade knife, mix the egg and milk mix into the flour, leaving a little for brushing the tops. You should have a soft dough, moist but not too sticky.
- Turn the dough onto a floured board or worktop and knead it very lightly. Do this by folding the dough from the outside to the centre, turning the dough until it is smooth and firm with no cracks.
- Dust a rolling pin with a little flour and, on a floured surface, roll the dough firmly and evenly until it is about 1cm thick. Do not roll the dough thinner than this.
- Take a pastry cutter (5cm) across, dip it in flour, and cut out scone shapes – you should get approx 8.
- Bake the scones in the top of the over for about 10 minutes.
- The scone should be soft inside, crisp and golden outside. Cool on a wire rack.
- A scone dough should be soft and spongy. Handle very lightly for best results.
